The CEO Mindset in Real Life: My Business Didn't Change... I Did.

I've spent more than 20 years in the medical field.
I never became a doctor—not because I wasn't capable, but because I never thought that was in the cards for this little Hispanic chica. Funny how our biggest limitations sometimes come from our own imagination.
Instead, I became a Medical Interpreter Specialist.
That role gave me something I never expected.
I didn't just learn medical terminology.
I learned how hospitals breathe.
I learned procedures, logistics, healthcare systems, and the cultures that shape how patients and families experience care. I felt the adrenaline of doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, and emergency teams while also feeling the fear, hope, and uncertainty of the families standing beside their loved ones.
Those experiences changed me forever.
Over time, I stepped away from much of the medical world. I focused on language assessments, interpreter standards, compliance, and policies that help organizations better serve their patients.
Then last year, my mother's end-of-life journey changed me again.
I took a step back—not just from work, but from myself.
For years, I thought what fulfilled me was building Registered Apprenticeships, traveling across the country for workforce conferences, speaking on stages, and partnering with Fortune 500 companies.
Don't get me wrong...
I still believe in apprenticeships. If you've ever met me, you already know I can probably talk about apprenticeships before I've had my first cup of coffee... and that's saying something.
Those experiences were meaningful.
But they weren't what filled my soul.
What fills my soul is listening.
It's helping someone believe they can accomplish something they never thought possible.
It's reminding people that change is uncomfortable, but it is possible.
It's sitting beside someone when they've hit rock bottom and helping them find the strength to take one more step.
And yes... it's making people laugh along the way.
If you've ever met me, you already know I can probably make you laugh while we're talking about life, business, AI, or even end-of-life care. Some people collect shoes.
I collect stories...
...and occasionally superheroes.
Throughout my journey, I've been blessed to work in healthcare, workforce development, entrepreneurship, language access, AI, education, and leadership.
Somewhere along the way I collected enough medical vocabulary to confuse doctors, enough workforce knowledge to survive government meetings, enough AI prompts to make ChatGPT sweat, and enough frequent flyer miles to know exactly which airport coffee is drinkable... and which one should probably come with a warning label.
There probably aren't many industries I haven't touched in some way.
But I never teach something I haven't lived.
Everything I speak about comes from experience—not theory.
I've also been fortunate to surround myself with incredible superheroes who have strengths I don't. They've taught me that leadership isn't about knowing everything.
It's about knowing when to bring the right people to the table.
When people call me, it's because they want someone they can trust.
Someone who will tell the truth.
Someone who will get it done.
Someone who believes in people before they believe in themselves.
No fluff.
This year, I made another difficult decision.
I paused our Registered Apprenticeship work in Arkansas and Ohio.
Not because there isn't a need.
There absolutely is.
But sometimes growth requires choosing the battles that allow you to keep your passion alive instead of becoming another data point in someone else's report.
My GPS has spent years saying...
"Recalculating..."
Turns out...
So was my life.
Sometimes protecting your purpose is just as important as growing your business.
Today, I see myself differently.
I'm a coach.
A cheerleader.
A trainer.
A speaker.
A medical language guru.
A business owner.
A listener.
A human being who wants every person I meet to walk away feeling a little stronger than when we first met.
I just happen to have built a business called Aha.
And just like the people I encourage every day...
I'm still growing.
I'm still evolving.
And I'm finally giving myself permission to become exactly who I was meant to be.
People ask me all the time,
"So... what do you do?"
Well...
That's a loaded question.
Some days I'm a medical language guru.
Some days I'm coaching a business owner.
Some days I'm speaking on a stage.
Some days I'm teaching AI.
Some days I'm simply sitting beside someone who needs another human to remind them they aren't done yet.
I built Aha because I believe everyone deserves an "Aha!" moment.
Mine just happened to come after 20+ years, a few gray hairs, thousands of airline miles, more cups of coffee than my doctor would probably recommend, and one life-changing reminder that success isn't measured by titles.
It's measured by the lives you leave a little lighter after you've walked beside them.
Now if you'll excuse me...
This chica has another adventure waiting.
And knowing me...
I'll probably find another superhero along the way. ❤️
